Hallstatt is a small and incredibly picturesque town in Austria, nestled on the shores of Lake Hallstätter See. If you’ve ever searched for beautiful views of Austria, you’ve definitely seen this tiny town tucked between a mirror-like lake and the steep slopes of the Alps. It is one of the most photographed places in Europe. Everything here looks like a postcard: cozy “gingerbread” houses, narrow streets, crystal-clear water, and magnificent mountains create an incredibly fairytale atmosphere.

A Toy-Like Town
Hallstatt is so small that you can walk across it in just 20–30 minutes. However, because of its unbelievable beauty—narrow alleys, flower-adorned houses, and swans on the water—it’s always bustling with tourists. In fact, Hallstatt is so beloved in China that they built an exact full-scale replica of it in Guangdong Province!
White Gold
The town’s history began not with tourism, but with salt. It is home to the world’s oldest salt mines, dating back over 7,000 years. It was through salt mining that the region became fabulously wealthy, allowing such grand architecture to be built in such an inaccessible location.
A Unique Ossuary
There is so little space in the town that the local cemetery could not expand. This led to a unique tradition: old bones were exhumed to make room for new ones, and the skulls were painted with patterns, names, and dates before being displayed in a special chapel called the Beinhaus (Bone House). Today, it houses more than 1,200 hand-painted skulls.
They say you should visit this place at least once in your life to believe that such beauty actually exists. Would you like to wake up here with a view of the lake? I certainly would!
Best things to do in Hallstatt:
- Capture the Iconic Shot: Head to the “Classic Village View” viewpoint for that perfect panoramic photo.
- Head into the Mountains: Take the funicular up to the “5 Fingers” viewing platform — the view from there is absolutely breathtaking.
- Take a Boat Ride: See the town from the water; it’s the only way to see it in its entirety away from the crowds.
Hallstatt Austria is a place where you want to slow down, wander without haste, and simply savor the moment.
